Design for your web site is a very personal matter. Your site needs to reflect your thinking as well as being efficient and fast.

To achieve this, your site should utilize HTML for the content, Cascading Style Sheets for controlling layout & appearance plus a Content Management System for updating your site. When you have a large amount of data to present, use of a database to contain your data presents the most efficient option.

A well designed site also needs to be hosted on a good server which provides the best performance for your site. The differences between good and poor specification servers can make all the difference for browsing your site.

There are 2 areas making up the Design of a site.

Firstly, the design and layout of the pages. This can be formulated either by doing visual sketches by hand or using traditional design tools. Whilst this will give you a visual for your site, it will only be useful as a guide for the web designer.

An alternative, is to prepare the visual by hand coding in HTML using a text editor or by using one of the visual HTML editors such as Dreamweaver, GoLive, Front Page or Web Fusion.

This method has the advantage of taking into account the restrictions imposed by the internet. The files produced by this method can also be used for the site construction.

The construction of a web site needs to be well planned.

The initial consultation and visual design stages should establish the main critical elements required for the site. Any necessary relational database tables have to be constructed and data entered to enable testing.

The site map should then be laid out and the HTML code for the home page, the first sub level in the site and one or two of the lower level pages prepared. These pages should only contain the content plus "h" & "p" tags. The appearance (fonts & colours) and layout for these pages should be managed through CSS files. After completion of this stage, the site owner should check the site and request any changes to the pages.
